Life wasn't something one could really ever get used to. The surprises and turmoils that it always threw at you were enough to make sure of that. Things could be hectic, crazy, and completely terrifying. But sometimes, sometimes things could be okay. Those rare moments in time when you could really smile, that's what anyone looked forward to. It didn't seem like those moments had been happening too often. At least not to one December Van Buren. There had been quite a bit of drama in pretty much everything she'd done. Her home life, especially. It wasn't as if school was helping any, either. Senior year had finally decided to prove to her why it really was Senior year. Endless amounts of homework and papers and projects were just thrown in her direction, leaving her little time for thinking about much anything else. But then there was one person who had decided to butt into her life, almost rudely, and take her completely by surprise. However, it was really exactly what she needed. For the longest time, Alexander Wyatt had not been the first name on her favorite people list. Not that she'd ever hated him, it was very hard to December to really hate anyone, but he had proven himself to be quite the annoyance from time to time. But that was before he'd discovered her on the side of the road that fateful night. That moment had changed pretty much everything. Well, maybe not everything, but quite a bit. In a matter of weeks it seemed that the young woman's world was flipped completely upside down. She had always known that one day she would fall for someone. Didn't everyone? But she never would have thought that it would be this boy. This boy who had been right in front of her for so very long and she hadn't even noticed.
She couldn't help but wonder that if she'd known a while ago what she knew now, if they'd been able to get closer sooner. Maybe, maybe not. It hadn't only been her that needed to open her eyes to see what was right there. Unfortunately, it had taken a terrible occurrence for the both of them to realize it. Though, the only important thing was that they had realized it. That they could be something more. Not just annoyances and two people who bickered for fun. In fact, it was sad how much time and energy they'd wasted on being angry with each other. Still, there was no going back now, and honestly, Ember found that she didn't want to. She was never really the type of person who lived in the past, to begin with. She certainly wasn't going to start now. No, moving forward had ultimately been the best policy. Because she'd ended up moving forward to something she never would have expected. Allowing herself to open up to Alex the way she had had possibly been the most terrifying moment of her life, which was saying something. However, she didn't regret it at all. By letting go of her fears, she'd revealed an entire side of him that she'd only had glimpses of before. Now that she'd put her heart on the line, she was rewarded with someone who was kind and sweet and who truly cared about her. She'd never really had anyone like this before. Alex was the one person in the world that she could really talk to. About anything. It felt strange and foreign, but at the same time, it was amazing to finally be able to do. Instead of keeping everything bottled up inside like she was so used to.
As much as she'd never thought it possible, Alex made the days much more bearable. Especially when times were rough with school work or with her father. The young man probably didn't even realize the positive effect that he had on her. Lately it seemed as if he soothed her instead of getting her riled up. It wasn't to say that they never bickered anymore. They were far too stubborn for that. But it was more good-natured than it used to be. December had recently realized that she could call herself happy. Sure, she still had the bad things in her life, but the good was starting to far outweigh it and that was something that Ember could never be thankful enough for. She finally had someone to keep her grounded, and that was enough for her. The days all seemed a little bit brighter and the nights a little bit shorter. She had begun to look forward to when he would call or when they were able to see each other. Her time spent with Alex was easily the most enjoyable she had. And memories of them were what she escaped to when she needed a place to go when her father was in a particularly bad mood. As the week came to a close, it didn't seem that she would have to settle for memories. Alex had invited her over to his house for a date and she wasn't about to pass up the opportunity. She needed a night of not worrying about anything except if she looked decent enough to be on on a date. Even if it was only at his house.
The moment that December had gotten home from school, she began to tear apart her closet, trying to find something that would be perfect for the evening. Something nice but not over the top. Classy and simple. Well, simple for her. She had a tendency to get a little creative with her wardrobe at times. Finally, after more than forty-five minutes of mixing and matching and throwing things on the floor, she found something that she was satisfied with. When she moved to her bathroom to start her shower, she removed her shirt and suddenly remembered the dark bruise just below the right side of her neck. She frowned at it, chocolate eyes irritated with the sight. She was going to have to find a way to cover it when her jacket was removed. Even if Alex knew about what he father did, it didn't mean she was going to be showing off all of her cuts and bruises to him. They only angered him, and she didn't want any negativity in this night. She was just lucky that the few other bruises that she currently held would be hidden from sight by her dress. Taking her eyes off of her reflection, she vowed to worry about it when she was finished getting clean. She let the hot water cascade over her form, loosening her tense muscles and easing some of the aches in her body. When it was over, she stepped out onto her bathroom floor once more. She knew she still had plenty of time to prepare, but she couldn't but feel as if she had to rush. Maybe it was the excitement pulsing through her veins that caused it, but it was really all she could do to keep from rushing through everything.
December slid on her dress, angry that it did little to cover the hideous bruise. This was when she did something she was becoming far too accustomed to. She grabbed her cover up, flinching slightly as she dabbed it on. It didn't exactly make the mark disappear, but it was less noticeable. It wasn't good enough, though. Ember moved to her hair, an idea striking her then. When it was dry, she pulled out the curling iron, putting most of her hair in loose waves. Snatching one of her hairbands, she gathered the waves and pulled them into a side pony tail which served to cover the bruise about as much as she could hope for. If she could just keep her hair in that spot, she would have no problem keeping the mark from Alex's attention. She then finished getting dressed, adding her shoes and jacket to the mix. Making sure her purse was filled with everything she would need, she glanced at the clock. If she left then, she might be a little early, but it was better than being late. Or maybe not. Depending on when Alex had started cooking. Truthfully, Ember hadn't even known he could cook. She just hoped that he had at least a little bit of talent. She didn't want to endure an awful meal for him, but she would if she had to. It was all a part of her kind and giving nature. She wasn't going to crush his dreams of making her a nice dinner, even if it was completely terrible. Pushing the thought from her mind, December descended the grand staircase of her home and made her way through the halls. She didn't need to worry about her father spotting her all dressed up, as he wasn't there, so she leisurely made her way to the door.
Once she was out into the cool night air, she clutched her jacket closer before making her way to her car. The drive to Alex's house was short and familiar. Most of the time was spent in silence. Normally she would automatically switch on her favorite radio station, but she was far too nervous to pay attention to music. She supposed it was silly to be nervous about going to see Alex, but she couldn't help it. The word date just had her anxiety spiking slightly. When she finally pulled into his driveway, she cut the engine of her car and took a deep, calming breath before going back out into the night once more. She hurriedly made her way down the front path and up the stair of his porch. Her finger hit the doorbell without her permission and those silly little butterflies in her stomach were woken up. She waited the few moments it took him to get to the door in impatient silence. When he finally opened it, the rush of warmth and his scent hit her and caused a large smile to spread across her features. "Hey." She said in a chipper voice. The butterflies had suddenly disappeared and she found his dark eyes easily, already starting to get lost in them.

If Alexander was going to sit down and be honest with you, which wasn't something he did frequently but the guy was working on it, then he wouldn't be able to tell you that everything in his life had been like some sort of fairytale. Ever since his father had died, things had been seeming to go downhill for the teenager and it didn't seem like anything was happening to allow it to slowly chug uphill even in the slightest. His role model and hero was no longer around for Alexander to be able to lean on and that in itself was enough to completely crush his heart. It was hard on anyone and everyone whenever they lost a parent, but it seemed that it was something even harder for Alexander to put up with just because of the way that he looked up to the man. Not only that, but his mother was practically out of his life at this point as well. Along with her having to take up multiple shifts at the hospital in order to get money into the house, Alexander had successfully managed to push her away completely as alcohol began to seem more important. He was still trying to push away how hurt he was by his fathers death, feeling like a dumbass about pushing his mom away (even though he wasn't doing a damn thing to try and fix it), as soon as the hangovers would come in from drinking his problems away he would feel somewhat guilty and tried to push that away as well, he was ignoring the fact this was the most important year of school for him, he was screwing things up with a bunch of girls who didn't deserve it and he was trying to not screw things up with one. As if he didn't need enough to think about and try to sort out, he had somehow made his way into December Van Buren's life. The second that he had seen her beautiful face for the first time, he had never expected to see it much again, but now, it was the face he saw the most frequently.
Alexander could never see himself being in a real, committed relationship. Just the very thought of it once used to make him laugh. It just wasn't who he was. He was the guy who put up this mask for everyone to eat up. He wasn't the one who walked around showing people exactly how he was, or else he wouldn't be hated in the same way he was. Alexander was so good at hiding that sweet side of him. That side of him that once used to be a part of him one hundred percent of the time. He knew how to be a gentleman, he know how to treat a girl right, but all of those abilities had been put into storage for quite an amount of time. So far, there really didn't seem to be a girl that meant enough to him to be capable of bringing those out of him again. The last thing he thought when he walked up to December was that she was going to be the one to make him want to be the person that he used to be. Maybe if he had known that she would be able to do just that, he would have never walked over to her. Maybe he would have. Everything going back to how it once was for him made him nervous and that much of it really didn't make any sense. It used to be great back then. Granted, he wouldn't be able to have his father back, but he would at least be able to make something of his life. As hard as it was now, it had been easier because sometimes he was able to convince himself that he really didn't care. It was easier to just be numb than care.
But, December had opened his eyes to so many things. It was now that he actually realized just how much he could care for someone. For the first time, he actually wanted to bring a bit of his old self back. He wanted to show December that he was at least somewhat worth her time, even though he didn't believe himself that he was good enough for her in the least. So far she had seen more of that side of him she shouldn't see than the one she should have and Alexander was more than determined to change that. December deserved to feel like she wasn't wasting her time with some lost cause, to feel happy and special. He was thankful just for the chance she was giving him. At this point in time, she could have already left his life completely and never looked back and if she ever had, he wasn't sure where or what he would be doing right then. But, what mattered and what he was constantly thinking about, was that she had and he was going to hold onto it with the strongest grip that he could manage. Because unlike the other countless girls that he had squeezed away from, he didn't plan on walking away from December and he didn't plan on doing anything that would make her want to leave. That wasn't who he was. Not for her.
Shoving a hand through his clean curls, Alexander let out a soft sigh. He had been running around like a lunatic all day. He had made plans with December for a dinner date over at his place and it wasn't until he said it that he realized what exactly he was getting into. First thing was first: he didn't have the slightest clue how to cook. Poptarts and Hot Pockets were a few examples of what the guy lived on whenever his mother didn't have leftovers for him in the fridge. But, Alexander was ready to do whatever he had to do to make this as special as he possibly could. He didn't plan on having December run for the hills by the end of the night. Just the word date was getting him a bit nervous, though. The two of them had hung out countless times together, but it had never been anything like a date. This was different. He hadn't expected anything to come bursting into his mind rapidly, but after sitting at school for a few hours, it was easier to ignore whatever the teacher was saying when he had something like this to think about. By the end of the day, Alexander was taking a quick stop at the closest grocery store. Grabbing a basket, he began his stroll through what used to be familiar to him. He used to go grocery shopping with his mother all of the time, but now, this place seemed foreign. The first thing he gently placed in the basket was a nice, small bouquet of flowers. Even Alexander was smart enough to realized that he needed some sort of centerpiece of the table. He even threw in a few small white candles. But, when it came to the food portion of it, Alexander wanted to strangle himself. After a good thirty minutes of walking around trying to figure out why the hell there were a hundred different kinds of everything and a few muttered profanities later, he was paying for what he had and driving back home.
He freshened himself up, keeping an eye on the clock frequently to make sure that time wasn't flying by faster than he thought it would before bringing everything into the dining room, which was divided from the kitchen by the counter that wrapped halfway around the kitchen. Making his way to the closet on the right hand side of the hallway, Alexander grasped the doorknob and allowed his chocolate brown eyes to look into it. It was a thin closet, where his mother kept decorations, towels, and tablecloths. Almost instantaneously his eyes noticed a crimson colored tablecloth and his hands came over to it before shutting the closet door. The way Alexander had set everything up was nearly flawless. Anyone could have thought that he had done it a dozen times before, but that would have been so far from the truth. The beautiful shade of red from the tablecloth seemed to work perfectly with the square table that was great for these kinds of things. He had trimmed down the flowers and placed them in the first face he found before placing the small white candles around it. Alexander was sure that as soon as he lit them, it would look even more impressive. The table was already set as well: knives, forks, cloth napkins, minus the plates and he had turned the cups upside down to.. well, it seemed right.
A grin tugged at the corners of his lips as he looked down at what he had created, but it quickly disappeared when he realized that he was screwed for the main part of why she was even coming over in the first place. Food. He had successfully failed at figuring anything out at the store and unless he wanted to impress December with a Hot Pocket, he had no clue what to do. That is, until approximately a full minute later. In a matter of seconds, Alexander was busting out his cell phone and calling the most delicious restaurant that he knew delivered. After ordering their food, he prayed that they didn't take five years to actually show up at his house with it. He wasn't so sure how he would handle having December already be at his house and some dude showing up at the door. As a hint of nervousness came across him again, his eyes darted over at the clock. A little less than an hour and if December was on time, she would already be there. He couldn't believe how fast time was flying by and how long he was taking to make sure everything looked great for her.
Thirty minutes of pacing around the house later, someone could be heard knocking at the door. Either he was screwed or extremely lucky. Swiftly opening the door, he let out a sigh of relief to realized that the man that was knocking on his door was not his girlfriend. Quickly pulling out the money and a tip, he handed it over to the man as he took the hot, closed tray of food. "Thanks, man. You have a nice night."
Alexander said with a nod before closing the door and quickly heading to the kitchen. Laying out two plates on the kitchen counter, he spent the time until he heard a knock at the door again putting an even amount of food on each plate, nicely. The smell of delicious rice and boneless chicken filled the kitchen perfectly that it made him think he could potentially pull off pretending to have made this meal independently. Head shooting over in the direction of the door, Alexander put the now empty containers into the trash can, barely thinking anything of them before quickly making his way over to the door. He stopped halfway there though, digging into his pocket for a lighter before quickly lighting the candles on the table. Just before opening the door, he dimmed the lights slightly that were just above the table. He had to say, he was pretty damn proud of himself. A sincere smile showed up on his face the second that his eyes laid upon her. "Hey." He responded back before slowly leaning down to close that gap between them with a short, sweet kiss. "You look... Beautiful." Never would anyone see Alexander look at another girl as adoringly as he did with December. He didn't even have to try. Taking her hand, he led her gently inside before closing the door behind her, the soft click letting him know that it had already locked. As soon as he knew that her eyes were going over what he had spent so long preparing, he felt a hint of nerves get the best of him. Letting go of her hand just as they approached the table, he pulled the chair out for her and waited for her to be seated before heading behind the long counter to the kitchen and grabbing the two prepared plates. "Telling you ahead of time.. I cannot be held responsible for any food poisoning or sickness that comes from this night." His tone was playful as he placed each plate on either side of the table. Taking a seat opposite her, he shot her another smile. Alexander was such a liar. But, this was a little white lie, right? It didn't count. M U S I C , that 70's show. S T A T U S , completee! It was funny how one could end up in a situation that they never would have dreamt of before. Time had a strange way of changing people, taking them in directions that veered them off course completely. Take Alex, for example. A while ago, he wouldn't have given December a second glance. Except maybe to catcall at her. But with time, he'd learned to see more than just her pretty face. The young woman wouldn't lie and say that she hadn't changed, too. She didn't normally let people like Alex Wyatt get under her skin. A year ago, she would have laughed in your face if you had told her she would be dating him. Nowadays, however, she saw the boy in a different light. A much more favorable light. To be perfectly honest, he was really the closest thing she had to family. Her own family didn't deserve the title. She did wonder how things would be if she had siblings. Maybe it would be better, maybe it would be worse. But there was really no point in lingering on the 'what if's' when she could enjoy what was right in front of her in reality. Even if there was no one she could turn to who was her own blood, she was thankful that she had people to turn to at all. Which was what made Alex to special to her anymore. That fact that she could come to him. With things she'd never imagined she could. Things that were so very personal that only the most trusted of people could be privy to them. She didn't know exactly when he'd gone from a friendly annoyance to her most trusted secret keeper, but she was glad of the change. Because it gave her the chance to see a whole different person. A person she'd found herself falling very hard for.
Which was partly what was making her so nervous for this date. It was their first one. Or at least, the first one they'd given the title to. They saw each other pretty much every day, but something was just different when you went through the effort to get all dressed up. It added a new kind of pressure that lounging around and watching movies didn't bring. It meant that you had to impress your significant other. December highly doubted that she was going to be too terribly impressive. Especially with bruises all over her skin. She only hoped that she was good enough for him, because otherwise she didn't know what she was going to do. Even so, the young woman couldn't say that she was all that worried. She didn't know why, but Alex had started to take a considerable liking to her. One she'd never really experienced with any other guy. With him things were just... different. Better. Easier. Safer. For that she would eternally be grateful to him. He would really never know the calming affect he had on her. How when she walked into the same room as him, she felt as if nothing could harm her, not even her father. No one else had ever accomplished such a feat. And she didn't even know why he was capable. She had thought, once upon a time, that no single person could make her feel completely safe. She'd been proven horribly wrong, though. This was one of the times she was glad to be wrong. No one wanted to constantly be afraid. Especially someone so tired of it as she was. She was ready to feel safe, ready to stop worrying about every little sound. And with Alex, she could find that state of mind.
So, as she impatiently went through the day, she was waiting for that feeling. Knowing it would only come when she saw him again. This could have been accounted for another part of the reason that she had rushed through her preparations. And then there was the simple fact that she wanted to see him. She always wanted to see him. Lately, anyway. A complete turn around from the times she'd been annoyed to find that he was in her presence. The more time went on, the more she forgot why she'd felt that way in the first place. With as funny and charming and sweet as he could be, anger just didn't register in her mind when he looked at her anymore. So, as she finally made it to his front steps, she could understand a little why the butterflies in her stomach had decided to make an entrance. The unconscious smile that encompassed her features when he opened the door seemed to push the butterflies back in their hiding place and instead brought with it a sense of peace. His own hey reached her ears before he leaned down, closing the gap between them and causing her poor heart to do multiple back flips. When it ended, she peered back up at him, eyes sparkling with happiness and excitement. His comment caused a light blush on her cheeks. "Thank you. So do you." She managed to say without sounding like a complete idiot. The look in his eyes only proved to widen her smile. It was her favorite look. The one that made her feel important, as if she really did matter to the boy standing in front of her who meant so much to December in return.
December let him take her hand and she followed him closely through the house that was soon becoming her second home. Dark chocolate eyes scanned the scene with wonder. Alex had done an amazing job on getting the right atmosphere and she couldn't help the feeling that she got knowing that it was all for her. She turned to look at him before commenting. "Oh, it looks so nice, Alex. I love it." As they neared the table, she caught the smell of something delicious and the surprise was luckily kept from her face. Honestly, he had been half expecting something to be burnt or disfigured. She now had hope that it would be decent, after all. She smiled at him as he pulled out her chair. "Thank you." She said before sitting down. She followed him with curious eyes as he went to retrieve the food and set it down in front of her. It even looked good! Maybe she was in for more of a treat than she'd thought. She then slowly removed her jacket, careful to keep a certain spot from view and sat it on the back of the chair. Her gaze returned to him as he spoke and she let out a light laugh. "That's very comforting. But just letting you know, you are totally paying for my hospital bill." Her grin turned to a smirk at the comment before she looked down at the food once again. Well, there's no time like the present. she may as well get the test testing over with. No matter how painful it may be. Though, she had a feeling that there really wasn't going to be any pain involved.
She picked up the fork and knife that lay beside the plate and cute herself a piece of the meat. Hesitating a second, mostly for dramatic effect, she placed it in her mouth and chewed. Her eyes lit up, realizing how good it actually did taste. After she swallowed, she spoke again. "Wow, Alex. I'll admit that I doubted you, but it's delicious." She continued with the meal, really only half paying attention to it. After a few moments she spoke again. "So, how was your day? Did you sweep any girls off their feet?" Her tone was joking and light, fitting the atmosphere nicely. She liked this whole date thing. It was going pretty well, if she did say so herself.
