She could perfectly remember the day that her world stopped turning. It was burned into her memory, a waking nightmare that she couldn't shake despite her best efforts. It happened almost exactly a year ago, a perfectly normal Thursday afternoon. The day was supposed to be just like any other; Lily and her mother were just returning from a particularly long drive to Dallas for another audition. While the record company hadn't guaranteed her a deal, the manager had told her that she had potential, and they wanted to see her again next weekend. Finally, she was so close to her dream of being a big musician; she could make everyone in her family proud, and she would be able to do what she loved in front of hundreds of adoring fans. There was nothing more in life that she could ask for, she lived and breathed for her music. Her spirits were high, and she and her mother were listening to some Michael Jackson with the volume turned up very high. There was nothing like an impromptu dance party to make her even happier, and soon enough the two burst out into laughter. It was times like this where life came effortlessly to Liliana, and she was grateful for it. However, there was a doctor's appointment that they had to attend to before they finally got home, which she was not so appreciative of. She didn't like the doctor's office, even if it was just a routine checkup that was scheduled for that day. There was something unsettling about the hospital to her, even if the office in her town was rather small. Nothing was remarkably huge in Midland, Texas, but she liked it that way. Although the city slickers and the big lights of Dallas had charmed her, Midland was always going to be her home. Her mother and her parked outside of the office in their normal spot, the one farthest to the left, and then went in for their appointment. This wasn't going to take very long, because checkups never did, and then Lily could go back to her life again. Things were looking up, and there was nothing in the world that could bring her down.
The checkup garnered no unusual results, which she expected. Lily was in tip-top shape, prone to mud-wrestling with her cousins or random sporting events at family reunions. She was active, and she tried to eat as healthy as she could, so why should anything turn up? She was eager to take her clean bill of health and go home, but her mother decided to tell the doctor about the weak spells that she had been suffering more and more frequently; there were periods of time where she couldn't even move, she was so drained, and there was no reason for this at all. The doctor seemed concerned and decided to draw some blood for testing, which startled Lily. The first prickles of fear touched her heart, growing strong with each passing moment. The results would come back clear, wouldn't they? They had to. Her jaw clenched fiercely and she did her best at pretending that she was just fine; it was her forte to be strong, even when her parents couldn't be. She had grown into a resilient girl, one who was able to handle things when they got shaky; tenacious and slightly stubborn, she plowed through life with a single-minded determination that impressed most people who knew her. This wasn't going to stop her. She would get another positive report, and she would be free to go. Lily had no need to worry, or to ruin her fantastic day. When the doctor walked back into the room, however, she knew that everything would change. Her mother's shoulders slumped in that tell-tale way, and the doctor's brows were sorrowed, his eyes softened by sadness. "I'm sorry," he said in the silence, and Liliana immediately knew that she was sick. She felt like the world was spinning way too fast, and there was nothing that she could do to slow it down. "Sorry for what?" the blonde dared to ask, her southern burr losing confidence in the wake of this new development. The doctor proceeded to tell her and her mother that she was suffering from an acute form of cancer; they couldn't be sure, but the blood results showed strong indications. The worse part was that they didn't know what kind of cancer, which made this all the more frightening. Liliana felt the blood drain from her face, her head suddenly heavy and hanging under the weight of the diagnosis; fear shot through her veins like liquid ice. Since when was her life a chick flick, or an awful tv series? This didn't happen to girls like her. Her eyes fluttered shut and she wished with everything in her weakening body that this would go away, that someone would save her from it all. Not only would this affect her mother, her father and the rest of her large family would suffer with her. The rest of the statistics and precautions and excess information was read aloud to them, but it all felt like background noise to Lily. What about her life, her dreams? In an instant, everything she'd worked for was gone.
They left the doctor's office, the mood considerably changed, and Lily looked at her mother once they were in the car. All they could do was cry, and cry they did, until there weren't tears left. "I'm sorry," Lily sniffled, wiping away a few extra tears. "I'm gonna fight ma, I promise." And she never intended to break that promise, either. She was fiery and strong, and this wasn't going to beat her yet. If she was going to go down, she was going to put up a valiant fight. The news was hard on everyone in the next few weeks, but no one was willing to call it quits yet; after weeks of research, her parents decided it best to pack up and move west, to December, California. The town wasn't far from LA, and the hospital had a better cancer facility than any one they'd been to in Texas. Maybe there they could start over, find a name for this cancer, and then get rid of it. Lily was loathe to leave the only place she'd ever known, as the town had given her character, but she had to do it. The goodbyes were teary, and there were plenty of them, but she was feeling better once they arrived at their new house and began unpacking. The blonde settled into a new routine here, enrolling in University in the fall and continuing with her music and her treatments at the improved hospital. The town wasn't so bad, and even though she was strongly homesick for Midland, she was adjusting. If anything, this entire experience would just make her stronger. She took classes, wrote new music, and along the way made a friend who became so much more to the sweet, curly-haired teen. His name was Colton Mercer, and he seemed like a godsend through all the tribulation. He was sarcastic, funny, and exceptionally handsome, and he always knew what to say to make her feel better. Their friendship was easy, with both of them mutually understanding one another. She stood by as the designated female best friend and watched him date countless girls, hating each one in her mind. Why couldn't he see that the only girl for him was right in front of him? Lily would practically stand out in the rain under his window for him, and he seemed a little oblivious to the fact. Sure, she was deeply infatuated with him, but did any of that matter? She couldn't get too close, because this disease could kill her and that would leave him heartbroken. The mental image of the handsome, charming Colton with a broken heart was enough to make her stomach turn, so she did her best to avoid it.
Lately, she couldn't hide it any more; she grew paler, thinner even, and she had turned down most of his offers to do the crazy stuff they used to do together. She just didn't have the energy, surely he'd noticed the change by now. One Saturday morning, Lily decided that she would tell him that she had cancer. It wasn't going to be easy, to see him hurt like that, but he deserved to know. They didn't keep secrets from each other anymore, and this was a huge factor in her life. She dressed simply and sent Colton a text telling him to meet her at their favorite bench in the square, at sunset when no one else would be around. Liliana knew there was no easy way to say it, but she still searched her brain for the simplest phrases she could think of. She had never felt so alone, walking by herself to the bench and thinking of such daunting things. This wasn't like them. They should be laughing and having a ridiculously unhealthy lunch together, not coming here by themselves so that she could place a burden on his shoulders. Liliana sighed to herself and sat down on the bench when she reached it, already weary from the few minutes it had taken her to get there. The illness was progressing, there was no way to ignore it now. Her curling blonde hair, which had become a trademark, partially obscured her pretty face as she stared down blankly at the paving beneath her feet. Lily's bright blue eyes threatened to glass over with tears, but she bit her lip and fought them as best as she could. Colton would know she was upset the moment he arrived, but she had to be strong for him, if not for herself. She straightened her shoulders but kept her head bowed, her hair tumbling around her shoulders in a messy, golden disarray. In the silence, she prayed fervently that he would arrive soon, before the weight on her chest crushed her soul completely.
